KATA TO 1993 154 An overstrike of a Hellenistic Tetradrachm of Thasian type on Athens in the Popina Hoard ("IGCH" 930) F. de Callataji and I. Prokopov As quoted by the "IGCH"l the Popina Hoard contai ned a large number (more than 170) of Hellenistic tetradrachms ofThasian type. Discovered in 1957 and then published in brief by T. Cerassimov/, a large part of it is now in the Museum of Silistra (146 specimens). The burial date given by M. Thompson is 125-100 Be. Recently, 1. Prokopov and 1. E. Batchvarov have devoted a special publication to this hoard-'. One of these Hellenistic tetradrachms ofThasian type shows obvious traces of overstriking (Fig. 3: Popina Hoard, No. 439: 16.247 gms). We can see in the right field of the obverse remains ofan inscription. Although it would be tempting to read this inscription from a horizontal point of view (something like "IOPT"), it has to be read vertically. So we read "H/I1/E/A//':,.". It is more than enough for a very precise identification. Indeed, they are the first letters of an Athenian spread-flan tetradrachm (the so-called "New Style" tetradrachrns) struck by the magistrates HPAKAE1I1HI-EYKAHL H [PA II KAEr] 11[HI] E [YK] A [HI] 11[10K or 10NY] or [10 Y first time that an overstrike ofThasos on Athens has been detected (we mainly have several cases ofThasos on Aesillasj+, The magistrates HP AKAE1I1HI- EYKAHI appear twice in the sequence of M. Thompson: first in 139-8 BC and secondly in 1371136 (following M. Thompson). The plates published by M. Thompson allow some very close comparisons (1: No. 752a, 757b, 2: No. 778a, 779c, 780b, 780c, 780d, 781a, 782a, 794c)5. Varieties Nos. 757b (Fig. 1) and 780b (Fig. 2) seem particularly similar to our tetradrachm and could have been produced with the same reverse die (taking into account the deformation due to the overstrike). As different numismatists have shown, we have to lower the chronology of M. Thompson by about 32 years6. So the overs truck Athenian tetradrachm was produced in the last decade of the second century BC (in 107/106 or 105/104 to take this assumption literally)7. The chronology of the Hellenistic Thasian tetradrachms (both "original" and "imitated") is still rather ill-known. The tetradrachrn discussed here belongs to the variety HX1 of Dr. Ilia Prokopov'i. The obverse die is not attested in other hoards but it is possible to find close parallels for the reverse type (G6). Nearest to our coin are: Popina Hoard ("IGCH" 930: 0.392, 407,417,419,447 and 492), Gradesnica ("IGCH" 571: No. 166,308,319,387,389 and 391) and "Haralanov Collection" (No. 57,1 [1]). So this tetradrachrn is included IOr] IO] Moreover, some leaves of the olive wreath mayalso be recognized in the same area (on the left of the inscription). There is no room for doubt aboutthis iden tification. It must be noted that, as far as we know, it is the I in one of the first waves ofThasian imitations. This kind of tetradrachm was dated to the 2nd decade of the l st century Be by G. Katsarova in her still valuable study of reference '. It belongs to the bulk of these massive imitations for which 1. Prokopov has numbered several hundred differen t obverse dieslO. Of course, this overstrike confirms a dating after the beginningof the 1stcentury Be, but the main interest probably lies elsewhere. This overstrike is an important piece in dating the withdrawal of Athenian rerradrachrns from ci rculaticn in this Northern area. It has to be added to the two cases of overstrikes of Aesillas on Athens 11. The "Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards" and the seven volumes of "Coin Hoards" mention several hoards buried at the end of the 2nd century B.C. and at the beginning of the l st century B.C. with both Athenian and Thasian coins ("IGCH" 913, 917, 918, 924, 963, 975, 977,978, "CH" I 92, "CH" VI 47 and 49, "CH" VII 133 and 141). Some of them also contain Roman denarii ("IGCH" 975, 977, 978 and "CH" VII 141). Wi th rh is evidence in mind, it seems that Athenian tetradrachms in Thrace and Macedonia were restruck gradually (covering several decades in the first half of the 1st cen tury Be). Fig. 1.
